Oxnard Man Charged with Battery on a Police Officer and Forcefully Resisting Arrest
VENTURA, California – District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that Joel Tapia (DOB 11/19/1987), of Oxnard, was charged with three felony counts of forcefully resisting arrest, battery causing injury to a police officer and attempting to take the officer’s firearm.
On July 29, 2018, an officer from Oxnard Police Department detained the defendant for an outstanding felony warrant. The defendant became physically combative and attempted to take the officer’s weapon. During the incident, the officer discharged his weapon striking the defendant. The officer also sustained injuries during the incident. The defendant fled the scene and went to his residence where he barricaded himself. He was taken into custody after a lengthy standoff.
The defendant is scheduled to appear on August 7, 2018, at 1:30 p.m., in courtroom 14 of the Ventura Superior Court, County of Ventura, for a bail review hearing. He faces up to 8 years 4 months in jail. He is in custody in the Ventura County jail with bail set at $1,000,000.
