Oxnard Mayor Tim Flynn talks about Channel Islands Harbor management agreement renewal

Attention harbor businesses, boaters, tourists, recreational users!

By George Miller

(3-10-15)- Host George Miller, CitizensJournal.us Publisher, interviews Oxnard Mayor Tim Flynn and Hollywood Beach resident/analyst David Finn, for KADYTV, on the upcoming Channel Island Harbor management agreement discussion and renewal vote coming up at the Tuesday, March 17 City Council meeting (will be listed 3-12-15 HERE).

The Good Morning Oxnard Show is recorded most Wednesday mornings (usually available as video on demand on kadytv.net within a couple of days), offering local personalities, issues and events- Hyper-local news, in the KADYTV tradition!   Past shows archived on the web site and via Citizensjournal.us.

Many people, including Mayor Flynn, believe that Channel Islands Harbor and the fine, wide, sandy beaches are a very rich gift, the jewel of Oxnard, a key factor that helps differentiate us from cities like Fresno or Modesto.  Channel Islands Harbor is a key gateway to the Channel Islands, home to a large sportfishing fleet, thousands of recreational boats, a great place for kayaking, jet-skiing, cruising, exploring, swimming and surfing/sunbathing the beaches outside the harbor. These resources not only provide for residents and users, but can bring in a good deal of net income for the benefit of residents, which is not the case right now.

So, wise development, maintenance and operation of the harbor is key to meeting objectives of its customers: residents, tourists, boaters, fishermen and other watersports enthusiasts.

With a half century-old  management agreement expiring, we hope it can be restructured for what has changed over that time and what hasn’t previously worked optimally. The proposed agreement will be posted on the Oxnard City Council web site some time Thursday, with the meeting agenda.

Discussion: Our objective was to cover this agenda:

We’d like to bring out what is good and bad about current situation/agreement and results, including:

1- Harbor development
2- Has harbor deteriorated? What good things were accomplished?
3- Who is the “customer?”- residents, boaters, tourists, businesses?
4- Quality of life/aesthetics
5- Finances- impact on harbor and businesses
6- What would we like to see in an agreement?
