Oxnard Mayoral Candidate Miguel Lopez kicks off campaign

By Dan Pinedo and George Miller

Dr. Miguel Lopez kicked off his campaign for Mayor in the election to recall and replace his opponent Mayor Flynn. Three other Council Members are also targeted in the 5-1-18 special election, masterminded by local financial executive and activist Aaron Starr. Lopez ran unsuccessfully against incumbent Tim Flynn for Mayor in 2016 in a spirited campaign.

Several people have remarked to us that this special election has much lower visibility and enthusiasm than the 2016 one. There were about 30 people, mostly faithful supporters, at this Riverpark event, in contrast to well over 100 who packed into his downtown campaign office over several hours at his 2016 kickoff. Aaron Starr had about 45 at a curious all comers invited candidate forum earlier this month.

Lopez has been highly critical of Flynn in several areas, from pivotal policy issues right down to how he runs meetings, but not on the signature issue of the recall campaign- wastewater rate increases. Nonetheless, he jumped on the recall bandwagon, which presents a a good opportunity for well-organized partisans to prevail in a typically light turnout special election.

He is competing with the defending incumbent Mayor Flynn, along with recall organizer Aaron Starr, longtime accountant and self-appointed city watchdog Lawrence (Larry) Paul Stein, Morey Navarro and perennial candidate Robert Lee Sumpter.

Lopez was formerly Oxnard Police Dept Community Affairs Manager and was heavily involved in often synergistic community affairs, where he was highly visible. He left to work for UCSB managing special projects and ended up with a new university gig down in LA, with a long daily commute.  Although Lopez lacks experience as an official or in business, he has impressive academic and police dept. communications experience,

After not being visible in public meetings for a long time, he started popping up again a couple of months ago. He made only vague hints to us at that time that he might run again. and only in response to questions.
