By George Miller

A Metrolink train crashed into a truck stopped on the tracks at a grade crossing at Rice Ave. near 5th Street in a farm and industrial area of Oxnard shortly before 5:45am, Tuesday morning, February 24th.  Four train cars were derailed.  There were 51 reported injured, 28 hospitalized and being treated at local area hospitals. Four are listed in critical condition.  There are no fatalities being reported at this time.

Three of the four cars were lying on their sides, although we could not see them all because the Police and Fire responders wouldn’t allow access to the site for safety reasons. Better views of the scene are available via links provided below.

Oxnard FD Battalion Chief Martinez and others said that the train conductor anticipated the crash and tried to implement emergency procedures. The truck driver attempted to flee but was apprehended, then questioned. The truck was nearly totally destroyed by the crash and fire. Ownership and cargo of the truck are still unknown to us.

Metrolink line VC102 is blocked.

The locomotive was pushing the train Eastbound (South) toward Los Angeles when the incident occurred. According to a CBSnews report, it was doing nearly 80 MPH when the engineer saw the tracks blocked and applied the brakes, but much too late. Various accounts estimated the speed between 40 and 80 miles per hour, so this might not be clarified for a while.
