Oxnard | More Gang Members Arrested for Alleged Firearms/Ammunition Possession and Possession of Narcotics for Sale

Oxnard Police Department – Incident Press Release

On July 22nd, at 12:55 a.m., officers from the Special Enforcement Unit (gang unit) were in the area of north Ventura Road and Gonzales Road reference recent gang activity.  Officers observed a white GMC Acadia commit a vehicle code violation. A traffic stop was conducted on Ventura Road south of Gonzalez Road.  When the traffic stop was initiated, the right front passenger, later identified as Fabian Ramirez (33 yrs), fled from the vehicle.  Officers recognized Ramirez, and knew him to have a felony warrant for his arrest.  After a short distance, Ramirez was stopped and found to have a concealed loaded unregistered 80% Glock style firearm in his waistband.  In addition, he had a large amount of heroin in his pocket as well as U.S. Currency.  Ramirez is a convicted felon, prohibited from possessing firearms/ammunition and currently on Post Release Supervision (AB109).

Ramirez is currently in the Post Release Offender Program, created by Assembly Bill 109 – the 2011 Public Safety Realignment – which was effective October 1, 2011.  This program mandates that individuals sentenced to non-violent, non-serious or non-sex offenses will serve their sentences in county jails instead of state prison.  The public should be aware that release under AB 109 is based on the offender’s most recent commitment offense, prior convictions are not considered.

The driver of the vehicle, Isaac Cortez (24 yrs), was also contacted and found to be in possession of a loaded .44 magnum Ruger revolver, which was not registered to Cortez, with 102 rounds of ammunition as well as a large amount of crystal methamphetamine and U.S. Currency.  Cortez is also a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms/ammunition.

Both subjects were arrested for numerous felony firearms related charges, the sale of controlled substances and other charges.

Suspects: Fabian Ramirez, 33 years old, Oxnard resident, Isauro Cortez, 24 years old, Oxnard resident
