Oxnard PD arrest man for attempted robbery armed with semi-automatic pistol

ambulance arial, adiposity sans-serif;”>On May 30th, case Saturday morning, 4:21am, Oxnard Police Officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of W. Gonzales Road regarding an attempted robbery incident. The victim was reporting that a male suspect had tried to rob him at gunpoint and was chasing him on foot in the area. An Oxnard Police Officer arrived on scene within minutes and saw the victim being chased by someone. The officer attempted to detain the suspect and he immediately fled on foot into a nearby apartment complex and out into an alley. The officer observed the suspect throw and small handgun over a fence into a rear yard in the 600 block of Lawnwood Way as he was running in the alley and captured him a short distance away.

The suspect was identified as Jose Chavez age 21 who is an Oxnard resident. The firearm was inspected and appears to be an operable semi-automatic pistol. Chavez is currently on CDC Parole and considered a prohibited person from owning or possessing a firearm. Chavez was booked into the Ventura County Jail for attempted armed robbery and numerous Felony firearms violations. OXPD report# 15-58023

In an effort to address the increase in firearms-related crimes, the Oxnard Police Department launched the Operation Safer and Stronger Initiative, as well as the Firearms Strike Team (FAST) led by the Violent Crime Unit, to proactively remove firearms from prohibited persons within the city. The objective of this initiative and FAST is to reduce gun violence in Oxnard through education, intervention, and enforcement.
