Dallas Cowboys training camp continues

By George Miller

Oxnard Assistant City Manager Scott Whitney announced at this week’s Council meeting that they had a deal to host the Ram’s Spring Training Camp in Oxnard at the same location the Cowboys will use in the Summer, further cementing Oxnard’s reputation for its outstanding weather and facilities being a magnet for such activities.  The terms were favorable, generating $90,950 in revenues, offset by $75,450 in estimated expenses, for a net of $15,500. Critics claimed that other costs would be incurred, but the benefit to the city, including hotel occupancy, employment, sales taxes and publicity, are expected to greatly exceed any likely costs.  The sports world was aware of the probable deal  before it was even approved by the City Council Tuesday night.

Whitney took the opportunity to remind all that the Cowboy’s Training Camp also continues, with a sweeter deal than in past years. Parking revenue alone was about $200,000. The camp the additional bonus to Oxnard of attracting many thousands of enthusiastic fans to practice sessions and games, which boost economic activity in the  city considerably in season.
