Pastor Rob McCoy: “The sledge hammer hit us all”

By Michael Hernandez

NEWBURY PARK—“Before this misery (the Nov. 7th Borderline shooting) struck our city, we all had our agendas but the sledge hammer hit us all” said Pastor Rob McCoy to his congregants and family members of two of the slain victims at Godspeak Calvary Chapel located in The Village at Dos Vientos Ranch, 320 Via Las Brisas.

“The sledge hammer goes to the foundation of what we are standing on.  Some people began to topple and have had to find higher ground,” said McCoy.   “Often a real relationship with God is found in pain.

“There are two views:  secularism where there is a material world and we are just matter and there is no God.  We are a dichotomy with a body and intellect (a two legged stand).  The other view is belief in a Creator—where we are body, soul and spirit (a three legged stool).  The two-legged stool is not effective for sitting.  We need the three legged one.  There is a real physical world with good and evil, truth and lies, right and wrong.

“It has been real hard.   It has been an awful, awful week.  We have families that have lost loved ones.  We got folks reeling.   Family members have chosen not only to go to the memorial service of their (lost) loved one, but to each of the memorial services.  The (Thousand Oaks) City Council has decided to do the same—travelling in a ‘posse of pain.’

“It is interesting that when people cry they do so just like I do.  They are not Democratic tears nor Republican tears nor Independent tears.  These are human tears.   I have watched parents speak from pulpits and hug thousands of necks.   I have watched family members get stronger.  I have seen lives being profoundly effected by the most unsuspecting ministers.”

Pastor McCoy quoting from Isaiah 65:1 said:  “I was sought by those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me.”   McCoy continued from Isaiah 66:1:   “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool.  Where is the house that you will build Me?  And where is the place of My rest?”   Psalm 23:2-3 provides the answer said Pastor McCoy:  “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the sill waters.  He restores my soul.”  McCoy concluded with Zephaniah 3:17:  “The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness.  He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

“I don’t remember the election of last Tuesday.  That is a thousand years away.  We need to get back to building a three-legged stool.  We need to let the world see the Lord by how we serve one another, by loving other folks.   This is how we serve,” said McCoy.
