Paul White’s Ventura Quality of Life State of the City Address- We are #1 in ….

By George Millernumber1

The “Quality of Life Ventura ” community activist group was intending to present its own version of the state of the city at the first council meeting of the year.  This would have been a pre-emptive move, since Mayor Nasarenko has yet to give the official version.

But they did not do this. When I asked QOLV Co-Founder Paul White why it didn’t happen, he told me the following:

“… it went down differently than anticipated.  For the first time in memory, just before comments started and I had my 9 minutes ceded, the Mayor announced that the longest anyone could have last night was 5 minutes, “because it’s so crowded tonight”.  And that after he spent 15-20 minutes praising and pandering to a high school girls volleyball team. “

So, QOLV elected to instead release it to media in pdf form ….

To be sure, Ventura is a very desirable place for tourism, shopping and living alike. But it does have some serious problems and these are the sole focus of the presentation. Accordingly, the six page linked document is illustrated, sparing of words, highly critical and dwells only on key alleged negative aspects of the city, which are highlighted as– Ventura is #1 in:

  • High crime rate
  • Tolerating crime
  • Homelessness
  • Wasting water resources and ruining our water quality
  • Wasting taxpayers’ money
  • Failing to maintain road construction
  • Failing to complete public projects
  • Promoting alcohol abuse

VenturaStateofCity2016We will of course cover the official government version of the S.O.C. address, when it occurs.

Last year’s official report: State of the City | City Of Ventura

QOL Ventura describes itself as a grassroots organization, dedicated to informing and educating people on issues, then uniting to take action to address them. It has a nice suite of offices in a city industrial park and appears to have some funding to pursue its aims.  A look at their website shows material on vagrancy, code enforcement, parking, water, housing and traffic.  They have also provided mentoring to at-risk students, run schools and have a program for combating gangs.
