Piru dam alert worries- no advance notice- UPDATED

Editor’s note: email from Oxnard Fire Chief Darren Base informing City Council of unannounced Piru Dam (we think he’s talking about the Santa Felicia Dam) test alert, no alert received by him and also his proposed corrective action.

Good afternoon Mayor, Council and Staff

I was made aware that the Piru dam alert system was tested today
without any prior notification to the public.

VCAlert sent out info of the Dam alert and then countered with a
message that it was just a test.

I am certain County and Piru dam officials will address this failure
of notification to the public and I need to follow up as to why I
didn’t receive the alerts.

Chairman Mr Dandy
Thank you for the back story on the alarm of a possible incident at Piru Dam when the warning sirens were activated in the surrounding area without advance notice some days ago .
As an elected official yourself I am sure you feel as I the concern of our city first responders was well deserved , and speaking only for myself  I am most heartened it was taken in a serious manner ; it’s good to know when the unexpected happens there are responsible trained people in place who are not only accountable for their action but also caring individuals concerned for the public welfare .
In this current state of world events vigilance must not go unnoticed. Our Fire Chief involvement in the matter as the responsible party for the safety of close to one quarter of a million residents in Oxnard proper and his notification to the elected leadership of the city was as I expect it to be . Thank you again for your clarification , I am passing it on to my City Manager so he can share with the rest of Councilmembers as I am warned by staff not to be in jeopardy of a Brown Act violation.

               Good Morning!!!
On Friday, September 29, 2017, at approximately 11:35 AM, there was an accidental deployment of the Emergency Siren at the Piru fire station and Piru Spreading Grounds by the firefighters at Ventura County Fire Station #28. They immediately notified United Water staff, the siren was deactivated and communications were established with concerned parties informing them of the situation.
