A local researcher believes that the video captured a group of three energetic males that are hoping to find a receptive female to mate with. At the beginning of the video, one of the whales rolls on the surface in a display that is euphemistically known as a “Pink Floyd”. It is worth noting how graceful and how tactile these animals are as the video continues to document their underwater ballet.

The Pacific Gray Whale population has been making the round trip journey from Alaska to the warm waters of Mexico for hundreds of years to birth new calves and to mate for the next season. From mid-December and January, the Gray Whales journey to the Gulf of Mexico to mate, bear young and then return north during February and March.

Gray Whale Watching Season began late December and extends until mid-April. A perfect way to gather with friends and family to catch a glimpse of nature up close, Island Packers now offers half day whale watching excursions to view these magnificent mammals.

Island Packers provides scheduled whale watching excursions from Ventura and Channel Island Harbor for half-day trips for $37 for adults, $34 for seniors and $27 for children 12 and under. Full-day trips to Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands are $59 per adult and $41 for children. Advance reservations are advised and can be made online at www.islandpackers.com or by calling 805-642-1393.
