Poland Trump speech:  A ‘defining’ moment and a ‘tale of two narratives’

By Michael Hernandez

President Ronald Reagan had his “Tear down this wall” speech at the Brandenburg Gate  of the Berlin Wall on June 12, 1987:

President Donald J. Trump now has his Western Civilization speech at Poland’s Krasinski Square in Warsaw.  Both speeches are defining speeches for these men; for their nations; and for the world.

President Trump’s 36-minute speech interrupted six times by chants of “Donald Trump—Donald Trump—Donald Trump” and written by speech writer Steve Miller spoke of how “the world has never known anything like our community of nations” (Poland and the United States):

  • “We write symphonies. We pursue innovation. We celebrate our ancient heroes, embrace our timeless traditions and customs, and always seek to explore and discover brand new frontiers.
  • “We reward brilliance. We strive for excellence and cherish inspiring works of art that honor God. We treasure the rule of law and protect the right to free speech and free expression.
  • “We empower women as pillars of our society and of our success. We put faith and family, not government and bureaucracy, at the center of our lives.
  • “And above all, we value the dignity of every human life, protect the gifts of every person, and share the hope of every soul to live in freedom. This is who we are.  Those are the priceless ties that bind us together as nations, as allies, and as a civilization.”

President Trump spoke of a “safe, strong, and free” Poland that “stopped the Soviet army bent on European conquest” in 1920 and of the 150,000 Poles that died during “that desperate struggle to overthrow oppression” during World War II (fighting both the Russians and the Germans) during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the deaths of nearly one in five Polish people.

President Trump concluded:  “Our own fight for the West does not begin on the battlefield—it begins with our minds, our wills, and our souls.  Today, the ties that unite our civilization are not less vital, and demand no less defense, that that bare shred of land on which the hope of Poland once totally rested.  Our freedom, our civilization, and our survival depend on these bonds of history, culture, and memory.

“And today as ever, Poland is in our heart, and its people are in that fight.  Just as Poland could not be broken, I declare today for the world to hear that the West will never, ever be broken.  Our values will prevail.  Our people will thrive.  And our civilization will triumph.”

U.S. mainstream media coverage of the Poland Trump speech can be evidenced by the headlines:

–MSNBC:  ‘Morning Joe’ slams Trump’s Poland speech opening: ‘One of the worst ever’

–Vox.com: Trump’s speech in Poland sounded like an alt-right manifesto “for family, for freedom, for country, and for God.”

–Newsweek: Trump in Europe:  First President in decades to skip Jewish Warsaw ghetto monument, angers rabbis

–CNN’s Acosta: Trump held ‘fake news conference’ by attacking CNN in Poland

How do these headlines compare to Breitbart News which covered the President in Poland with multiple stories:

–Trump praises populist Poland, says West must ‘defend civilization’ and ‘faith’

–President Trump meets with Polish President Duda on first stop of Europe tour

–Trump renews pledges in Warsaw after Obama’s broken promises to Prague

— Coincidence? Polish government seats Trump beside painting of Polish King famed for routing Islam from Europe

— Majority of Poles would rather leave EU than be forced to take Muslim migrants

— Women stage ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ protest against Trump in Poland

— What to expect from President Donald Trump’s Europe tour

Opinion:  It’s time for American citizens to standup to the mainstream media and say “no more:”  “No more” fake news.  “No more” lies.  “No more” bias.  It’s time for news to be reported as news and opinions to be labeled as commentary or opinion.  It is time for the mainstream media to report “fairly” on President Trump.

Too bad that the MSM reported opinion instead of news.
