Politically Incorrect Zone: The Gun Debate–Make both sides pay

Political correctness

I’m going to take a shot at the light-hearted topic of gun control… but from perhaps a fresh, new perspective. I’m going to challenge BOTH sides of the debate to prove that reducing criminal gun violence and accidental gun deaths are truly their goal – as opposed to gaining money, power and control over Americans.

I’m going to start, however, with a couple of assumptions. First, that the Second Amendment applies to all law-abiding Americans, whose right to bear arms “shall not be infringed.” That’s hardly an extreme assumption – not any more so than assuming the First Amendment applies to all Americans. My second assumption is that too many gun owners are not responsible enough in securing their own guns, allowing criminals to access them, children to find them and disturbed friends or family members to use them in suicides, etc.

Both of those assumptions bring me to a remarkable new device, called the “SAF-T-LOK” (saftlok4guns.com), a gun “trigger lock,” for lack of a better term. These devices, once installed to a gun, will lock the gun, whether loaded or not, and can be unlocked instantly when the owner punches in a 3-digit combination. They render a gun tamper proof and unfireable until the combination is quickly entered – at which point the gun can be operated as normal.

And now for my challenge: All new or used firearms customers have the OPTION of adding a SAF-T-LOK (or approved competitor’s product) at the point of sale. If they choose yes, they only pay HALF the cost of the locking device, while a combination of both the Federal Government and gun advocacy groups pay for the other half!

So the challenge is to all three players involved: The retail gun buyer, the Federal Government and groups such as the National Rifle Association. It’s important to note that in keeping the purchase voluntary, we keep our Bill of Rights intact, but in subsidizing the purchase, we help incentivize the buyer to “do the right thing.” It’s also important to note that we’re asking two opposing groups, but who both claim to share some of the same goals – namely, to increase gun safety and reduce gun deaths, to collectively match funds with the gun buyers on each gun lock purchase.

The good news is that the money for this program already exists! The Federal Government can take the money it now uses to write and enforce new, unconstitutional gun legislation and buy, and even promote, gun locks and gun safety! Likewise, the NRA and other pro-gun groups can use the money they would have used to defend their members or the Second Amendment in court, or for lobbying, on gun locks and promoting gun safety! In other words, as soon as those two forces stop fighting and work TOGETHER, lives will be saved.

But as long as we continue this “feel good” conflict between pro gun and anti-gun groups, memberships may swell in groups on both sides – but we’ll continue to lose our sons, daughters, friends and loved ones to gun violence and gun accidents. Preventable deaths.
