POLITICS | California Democratic Party Pays Over $1 Million To Settle Sexual Harassment Claims Against Former Chair: Report

    daily caller

    ANDREW KERR INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER

    .

The California Democratic Party will reportedly pay more than $2.9 million to settle three lawsuits from former staffers alleging sexual misconduct racial discrimination against the party’s former chair, Eric Bauman.

The party is paying more than $1 million to settle one of the lawsuits alleging sexual assault, harassment and racial discrimination from three individuals — former operations director Tina McKinnor, former communications director John Vigna and activist Spencer Dayton — The Wall Street Journal reported.

McKinnor, who is black, alleged in the lawsuit that Bauman had criticized her “urban” clothing style and told her that the California Democratic Party is “not ready” to have an African-American such as herself interact directly with major donors.

Dayton said in the lawsuit he was groped twice by Bauman, and Vigna said the former party chairman groped him “nearly on a daily basis” while calling him “baby” and asking to be referred to as “Daddy,” the Journal reported.

The second case involved Bauman’s former personal assistant William Floyd was settled for $1.75 million, the Journal reported. Floyd alleged the former party chair forcibly performed oral sex on him at least three times between March 2016 and November 2018.

The third case involved former video editor Brendan Stepp, who accused Bauman of making unwanted sexual advances. That case was settled for $150,000, the Journal reported.

California Democratic Party chairman Rusty Hicks said the party reached “equitable settlements” with the plaintiffs in a Facebook statement Friday. (RELATED: California Dem Chair Looking Into Alcoholism Treatment After Numerous Sexual Assault Allegations)

“Some of the California Democratic Party’s most sacred values are fairness, respect and dignity for all,” Hicks said. “Those values empower so many grassroots leaders and activists to devote their time, talent and treasure to our Party’s candidates and causes.‬”

‪”Moving forward together, we collectively reaffirm a steadfast commitment to our Party’s values to win in 2020 and build a community that empowers every Californian,” Hicks said.

The settlements announced Friday came after the party paid $380,000 to settle a lawsuit in October 2019 from three other party staffers who also alleged discrimination and sexual misconduct by Bauman. The trio said in their lawsuit that Bauman’s conduct was “well-known and apparently tolerated” by top party officials, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Bauman, a former Los Angeles labor leader who was the state party’s first openly gay chairman, had previously denied the allegations against him, saying through his attorney that he “looks forward to complete vindication once the facts come out.” Bauman resigned from his post in November 2018 after the Los Angeles Times first reported the allegations.

Campaign finance records show that the California Democratic Party has spent over $2 million on legal fees related to the allegations against Bauman.

This post was updated to reflect the settlement figures reported by The Wall Street Journal for William Floyd and Brendan Stepp.

What this is the only one who has done this in the California Democratic Party? The question isn’t has this behavior stopped because the leader resigned and damages were paid out. The question is: Is this a continual problem that is going under reported throughout the DNC and Democratic Parties across the United States? Has there been accountability held upon any perpetrators or are the claims being silenced so word of wrong doing doesn’t get out and possibly tarnish a supposedly spotless record? These monies are supposed to go to candidates campaigns who want to win elections…not to be settling lawsuits because someone doesn’t want to be held accountable for wrong doings. If there is no will within the California Democratic Party leadership to properly address any wrong doing issues then the California Democratic Party needs to be shut down permanently in California, or, shut down until at such time real leadership will take the reigns!
