Public Advisory:

The Port Hueneme Police Department is advising citizens to take caution and care when responding to, or placing an ad on a social media site. The suspect in this case made up a fictitious name and email account and requested the seller deliver the item for sale for extra money. The suspect convinced the seller to meet on a street corner at night. Once the suspect had the property in hand, he ran away with the property. This form of transaction is becoming more common.

If you decide to conduct a transaction like this, make sure you get a call back number and use it at least once. Don’t answer your phone when someone calls from a blocked number or a different area code. Plan to meet at the seller’s home or arrange the meeting in a police department’s public parking lot or the police department lobby. Both locations should have surveillance cameras and a criminal will want to stay as far away from a police station as possible. Bring a friend. Most importantly, use common sense and be careful.
