Port Hueneme City Council addressing Poor Air Quality

The City Council meeting Tuesday night was a success for the 12 residents attending the city council meeting and those affected by the poor air quality and noise pollution in the neighborhood. Thanks to Kathy and Steve Biddle for speaking in Open Forum and describing the effects of the air and noise pollution on Port Hueneme residents.

The City Manager Rod Butler and Mayor Will Berg stated that they were very aware of the situation thanks to residents’ postings and news coverage that is occurring. They have been in touch with Oxnard officials and reported that there is major concerns by both councils on the severity of the air and noise pollution. Rod announced that the issue of smelly air will be put on the councils agendas so any info and updates can be discussed and related to PH residents.

I was at a meeting this week with Oxnard Wastewater Plant manger Jan Hauser and Chief Engineer Ng Thien and they reported that an iron based chemical solution is now being inserted into wastewater at upstream pumping stations and should eliminate some of the smelly air. It is on a six months trial and the results will be evaluated for continued use. In the last week reports of smelly air have greatly been reduced and this iron solution was successfully used and installed in LA and San Diego.

Jan stated that the Oxnard City Council had contacted him about the air pollution and asked that the situation be addressed immediately and that a meeting be set up with the New Indy Recycling Plant to discuss what the two plants can do to work on eliminating the air and noise pollution. A meeting is scheduled for next week with the two plants. I will get a report on the meeting and relay it to residents.

I also presented a review of the above to the city council Tuesday night so that they are currently updated on the situation. Today the City Manager, Mayor and myself will do a video review of the city council meeting that will be posted early next week.

Keep up the posting of any events you smell or hear and log in on the google app and call the VC Air Quality Board and New Indy hotlines and email Oxnard and PH city officials.

Your participation along with news/media attention is vital to solving the air and noise pollution problems that is greatly affecting the quality of life we deserve. Any questions or suggestions are always welcomed.
