Mar Vista is  public housing for low income seniors and disabled citizens.  The city council acts as the overseer for the city.  A number of Mar Vista residents came to the April 4th  council meeting to state that nothing had been done as promised by the city since a complaint last September resulted in a non smoking ban at MarVista  The ban was to take effect April 1st, so far not one “no smoking sign”,  no notification to residents of the smoking ban or action taking about smokers  smoking in the building.  Mar Vista speakers stated that the ventilation system is filled with  black goo from cigarette smoke accumulated over the years.  Several residents have contracted respiratory health issues according to their doctors from second hand smoke.

The sad  pathetic problem for us is the dysfunctional city hall handling of critical medical and environmental crisis to some of our most vulnerable citizens. Catherine Broude said calls to city officials, including the assistant city manager Carmen Nichols, asking when no smoking signs and to remind smokers not to smoke notices would go out have been ignored. The top city officials earn in excess of $100,000 to $150,000+ for assistant city manager and $200,000+ for city manager for a town of 22,000 residents   As I venture around Ventura County the response I get from this is “unbelievable, are they out of their minds and heads should roll for whoever approved such insane salaries.

This would include city managers, department heads, city council and anyone else in this terrible display of ineptitude, lack of sympathy for the needy and blatant disregard for the pledge they took to serve Port Hueneme residents and disregard to the statement “In God We Trust” that hangs above the pictures of city council members. I doubt God would have neglected these needy residents.  This statement will have little meaning until city government actions show that they really care and can be a dependable asset for the citizens of “the friendly city by the sea”.  Does the HUD investigation of misuse of $2.4 million in HUD funds include gross negligence of civic responsibility?  Let city hall know how you feel!   Also contact  [email protected]
