Port Hueneme Police Department – Incident Press Release

Jose Antonio Romero, 34 years, Transient

On March 21, 2020, at approximately 1:25 p.m., a Port Hueneme Police Officer was patrolling the area of Hueneme Bay. Hueneme Bay is a large senior citizen complex comprised of over 500 residences in the City of Port Hueneme. During this time, the officer noticed a subject on a bicycle who was later identified as Jose Antonio Romero. The officer observed suspect Romero following the Amazon delivery truck on his bicycle.

The patrol officer attempted to contact the suspect but the suspect quickly attempted to evade the officer. The suspect was tracked down on Channel Islands Blvd where he was riding his bicycle against the flow of traffic. The suspect was contacted and determined to have a no bail felony warrant for domestic violence. The suspect was also identified as a Post Release Offender and has an extensive domestic violence and narcotic history.

During the suspect’s arrest, he was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The suspect was booked into  the Ventura County Main Jail on his no bail warrant and was released on his own recognizance for the narcotic violations.

With more Americans using delivery services such as Amazon, criminals are using this opportunity to steal packages from unsuspecting victims. Tailgating delivery trucks is a common tactic exercised by these criminals. Here are some helpful tips to protect yourself:

  • The United States Postal Service offers a Hold for Pickup option. This allows customers to have their shipment held at the post office for pick up, instead of getting dropped off and left unattended.
  • Amazon offers deliveries to Hub Locker locations. Some are located inside grocery stores or retail centers.
  • UPS recommends requiring a signature for package delivery or pickup at a partner location.
  • See if a friendly neighbor or a trusted friend can hold onto your shipment.
  • Sign up for the text option so you are immediately notified when a package arrives.
  • Consider installing security cameras as a deterrent.
