President of Largest Law Enforcement Association in California Takes Issue with Anti-Police Rally

Sacramento: Brian Marvel, the recently elected President of PORAC, and a career law enforcement officer, issued the following statement on the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) plan to co-sponsor an anti-police rally designed to remove police from Los Angeles Unified School District.

“I decided to seek a leadership role in PORAC because I believe we need to make every effort to get beyond the divisiveness that threatens to cripple our state.  I plan to invite the President of UTLA to meet with me personally.  I would like to discuss what would prompt them to support a rally with the primary purpose of removing the more than 500 police officers who have worked effectively to protect the almost 650,000 students at the Los Angeles Unified School District schools.

I am interested in understanding why the representatives of the teachers would support such a drastic action – one that I am concerned will negatively impact at-risk students already exposed to the consequences of drugs, gangs and violence.  I am also bothered that their action reflects a lack of respect for law enforcement officers charged with doing a job that is done with integrity.

My decision to meet with UTLA leadership is based on the fact that we work alongside their members on campus.

I am also hopeful that I will be able to have meetings with representatives from Black Lives Matter and the ACLU.

The goal is for us to find common ground and open communication on issues all of us share as Californians.”

The Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) was incorporated in 1953 as a professional federation of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.  Today, PORAC represents over 70,000 public safety members and over 930 associations, making it the largest law enforcement organization in California and the largest statewide association in the nation.
