Pro Choice vs Life in Ventura County

Pro-Lifers protest Planned Parenthood abortions and demanding its defunding, while pro-choice advocates seeki to preserve abortion on demand and federal funding

This article contains both news and opinions

For years, we have seen or heard of protests of Planned Parenthood and abortion, usually held near the Ventura County Government Center and down nearby Ralston Street outside the Planned Parenthood office. There are sometimes just a few people. Occasionally there are  hundreds. Sometimes pro-choice/abortion people show up.

On 2-11-17 there were both- with nearly 350 people present- more if one considers those who came and went during the event, standing on all four corners of Victoria and Telephone Rd. The protesters were overwhelmingly there to demand that Congress defund Planned Parenthood (#DefundPP), which receives nearly a half billion dollars annually. There were also about 80 pro-choice advocates there, somewhat emulating the recent marchers in DC, but more peaceful and more focused on abortion.

What triggered this particular event was strong support for the Congressional bill to defund federal money to Planned Parenthood.  This has already passed the House, via the Care Act, but faces  a tougher fight in the Senate. The most likely way to defund PP is via budget reconciliation, which only requires 51 Senate Votes. But even that is no slam dunk, as at least two Republican Senators- Collins and Murkowski, are PP supporters. It is likely that President Trump would sign it if it passed. This would likely prompt legal action, although Congress has no obligation to fund it.

Pro-life and pro-choice people stood literally side by side, each holding up their signs , sometimes chanting slogans or prayers. We overheard multiple arguments, discussions and sometimes angry rejoinders. The nearest thing we heard of any violence was a pro-choice protester pushing down an upraised sign.

This event was organized by Mary Rose Short, Ojai activist, daughter of the Chief Legal Counsel representing the Center for Medical Progress litigation defending David Daleiden. He is the anti-abortion activist who made the videos exposing Planned Parenthood and joint actors dealing in baby parts. We were unable to readily determine exactly who organized the pro-choice presence there. It appeared that multiple organizations may have recommended participation.

What federal funding does Planned Parenthood receive?

Per Life News and the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO):

The report found the Planned Parenthood abortion corporation and its affiliates received $344.5 million in federal funds and another $1.2 billion in funding from Medicaid (which includes a combination of federal and state funds) for a total of $1.5 billion over three years from federal programs. The abortion giant receives $1.2 billion from Medicaid, $201 million from the Title X family planning program $40.6 million from Title XX Social Services block grants and $25.9 million from the Title V Maternal and Child health Services block grant.

Planned Parenthood and Abortion advocates respond to this by saying that the funding stipulates that the money cannot be used for abortions. But, while this is true, every dollar received for other purposes frees up other money for abortions, also makes PP stronger and helps funnel in more customers, many of whom end up getting abortions, say pro-life advocates.

Pro-choice people say that drying up PP funding would deny needed healthcare services to many women (and girls). Pro-life people respond that that there are 13 times as many non-abortion providers for those services provided by PP, so there would be no loss of services if those funds were allocated to what they believe are more deserving organizations.

What is Planned Parenthood’s focus?

Pro-life advocates want PP defunded because they say it is focused on abortion. But PP supporters claim that it is not and that only a small percentage of its activities are abortions, with other women’s health care service making up the balance. That number is over 300,000 annually, making them the largest abortion provider. Critics claim they have evidence that PP is heavily biased toward doing abortions ….

FTA: “Then, at the end of January, Live Action revealed that Planned Parenthood uses ultrasounds to determine the unborn child’s age and position in the womb for purposes of aborting the child, but refuses to provide ultrasounds to women who want to keep their babies and would like to check on their health and that of their baby. As one Planned Parenthood staffer put bluntly on one of Live Action’s recordings, “We only do ultrasounds if you are terminating.”

Abortion arguments pro and con

Pro-choice advocates support abortion on demand, Planned Parenthood and federal funding to support that organization. Most support abortion under almost all circumstances, although some advocate doing it only before the fetus could be viable outside the womb.  Some advocate doing abortions only in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life would be endangered by carrying to term. Most advocate doing it without parental permission or even knowledge.

Their rationale for all of this is that women are totally in charge of their own bodies and no one else has any right to intervene. They also feel that abortion is an important population control tool (60 million abortions since Roe v Wade), which means about 100 million+ in population). They also believe that it is a worse evil to bring an unwanted, poorly cared-for child into the world than to commit abortion.

They do not believe that fetuses are persons, nor do those have any rights.

A large number of pro-choice people are in favor of full sexual freedom, even for minors. They believe that school sex education should arm children with facts they need to make decisions and protect themselves.

Pro-choice advocates point to what they say are dropping abortion and birth rates to support their views.

Sample pro-choice article:

Pro-lifers maintain that abortion is killing an unborn child, which is equivalent to murder. They point out that a fetus soon shows all the characteristics of a human being, including heart beat, reactions, movement, thoughts and ability to feel pain. They believe such beings have an inherent right to life, which should not be ended for convenience.

They also point out that when a pregnant woman is murdered and the fetus(es) dies, the perpetrator is charged with multiple murders.

While they acknowledge that women have a right to control their own bodies, they point out that at least two lives are at stake, both human. Most pro-life advocates tend to favor parental involvement in decisions of pregnant dependents. Many also believe that fathers should have a say.

While most pro-life people are not opposed to all school sex education, some would prefer not to start so early and not to include so much apparent advocacy for minors’ sexual activity, some of it deviant, which they feel helps to legitimize it in young, impressionable minds and actually make sexual activity and pregnancy more likely.

Some advocate doing abortions only in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life would be endangered by carrying to term.

When a woman is pregnant, it is said she is “with child”. She is not carrying a can of soda or a carton of milk or a puppy. On Saturday February 11, 2017 I joined tens of thousands of people in 45 states to rally for Congress to fully defund Planned Parenthood and their largely abortion-mill practice. The measure was introduced into the US House by CongressWOMAN Joni Ernst at the end of January where it passed. Soon it will be taken up again in the Senate. It is imperative we prevail at the very least because the Federal Government has no business using our tax dollars to fund this practice and because they should not be involved in our health care decisions. But that is the LEAST of it.

My views on abortion have changed over the past 40 years. Part of that change results from the tremendous strides made in the science of human reproduction and the ability to SEE babies at their formation and beyond. No more “pro-choice” euphemisms for me. That is merely a slight-of-hand trick used by abortion supporters to direct a person’s focus from the topic’s truth. This past week, a British firm published an MRI video of a 20-week old fetus, the latest development in monitoring the goings-on in the baby’s womb-home. When I saw the clip, I thought: I’m with her….or him!

While at the recent defund Planned Parenthood rally in Ventura, a fellow-defunder, a young woman about 14 asked me a profound question: “I don’t understand. Why are people over there with children saying the choice to abort is the woman’s right. How do they think that makes their young children feel?” This young lady’s sister or friend of about the same age was wearing a jacket with a terrific quote from Ronald Reagan: “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.”

Our serious purpose was not without smiles, laughter, and some levity. One placard read: “Remember, even Superman was adopted!” Sadly, there was no mirth from the opposition who waved signs an inch from my nose and even one woman who grabbed my shoulder to pull my sign-arm down.

I wish I could say I was surprised by the opposition’s behavior but the angry, hollow eyes and piercing, strident voices mouthing euphemisms about “pro-choice” are really saying that a woman with child who makes a choice to abort will produce a dead baby. No wonder there were no expressions of joy or happiness. Many folks among this sad lot of people proudly sported the now-infamous pink “pussy” hats and chanted the Left-wing catechisms of “My body, my choice”. My response to them is: “Ladies, keep your legs closed. Make THAT your choice.”

Finally, if among some readers you waver on whether abortion should be funded by tax dollars (at the least) or is murder (at the most), I urge you to look at and to listen to the testimony from Dr. Anthony Levatino. Dr. Levatino is a reformed abortionist who performed over 1,200 abortions before he actually looked at the sleight-of-hand remains, finally acknowledged what was really there, someone’s “son or daughter”.

Roe v Wade

The 1973 Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 ruling  is a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion. It was decided simultaneously with a companion case, Doe v. Bolton.  The court ruled on the side of those wanting to legalize abortion in the US. It had the effect of invalidating state law prohibitions on abortion, although conditions could still be placed on it. Those conditions have been in contention ever since then.

Norma McCorvey was used as the  Roe v Wade plaintiff. She later repudiated the case, saying that she was exploited by the plaintiff legal team and had also changed he views on abortion. She died recently.

President Donald Trump has said that he is personally opposed to abortion, although he wasn’t always so. He believes that it should not be a federal issue and should be left up to the states. He has promised to nominate Court justices who would overturn Roe v Wade, although it is unclear how many more votes he would have to deliver to overturn it.

If this happens as he envisioned, it is very likely that abortion would remain legal in CA, but there would  be increasing moral pressure to reduce abortions and place further conditions on them. We don’t know of any plans for federal statutes on abortion.

Fake news from the American Taliban. The pro life argument is anti science driven. The root of anti abortion feeling is found in the creationists and best anti women beliefs of the 1800’s. I would be surprised if they believed the earth revolved around thr sun. To interfere with people when the seek health care is a disgusting tactic. Any church that preaches hate against PP should have its tax exempt status removed or better shut down. This is America not Afgainistain.

William Hicks

It’s a vicious cycle when tax dollars are used for special interest groups. The more they receive from tax dollars the more they have to fund the elections of sympathetic politicians willing to continue providing tax dollars for their special interest.
