Don Bartletti, a former Los Angeles Times photographer, will present “The Roads Most Traveled: Photo Essays About Immigration” at 7 p.m. March 16 in Lundring Events Center on the Thousand Oaks campus. He will answer questions after the presentation. A reception featuring refreshments will precede his talk at 6:30 p.m.

Bartletti, who was on the staff of the Times from 1984 until he retired in November, dedicated most of his career to covering the causes and effects of economic migration across the southern border of the United States and within nearly every state in Mexico. He is currently compiling a book on the subject.

He won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography and the 2003 Robert F. Kennedy Award Grand Prize for International Journalism for his six-part photo essay on young Central American migrants. “Enrique’s Journey – The Boy Left Behind” told the stories of Central American children riding freight trains through Mexico on desperate quests to reunite with their parents north of the U.S./Mexican border.

Bartletti was a 2015 Pulitzer Prize finalist in international reporting for his series on Mexican farmworkers, “Product of Mexico.” He documented harsh conditions in labor camps on Mexican farms where much of the produce Americans eat is processed. He also received the Robert F. Kennedy Award for International Reporting for the series.

Last year, Bartletti received The Robert Spiers Benjamin Award for Best Reporting on Latin America from the Overseas Press Club of America for his first-person story recalling how a 12-year-old Honduran boy taught him to stow away on the freight trains through Mexico.

In addition to photographing migrants, Bartletti traveled to 23 countries around the globe to cover wars and other issues. The Vista resident has received more than 40 international awards. He won a prize in the Science & Technology category of the 1997 World Press Photo contest for an image in which his son appears to be catching a comet.

Bartletti lectures and exhibits his work throughout the U.S., Mexico and Central America.

Cal Lutheran’s Artists and Speakers Series is sponsoring the free event. Lundring Events Center is located in the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center on the north side of Olsen Road between Campus Road and Mountclef Boulevard.
