Ribbon cutting for the newly paved alleys in Somis

By Debra Tash

In a symbolic gesture this morning, Supervisor Linda Parks, cut a ribbon strung across the alley behind the Somis Post Office.  The alleys, which run in back of a small commercial strip of storefronts on the east side and private homes on the west side, have been a problem for residents for years. Prior elected officials representing the area when the community was under Board of Supervisors District 4,  Judy Mikels and Peter Foy, couldn’t get the deteriorating pavement repaired.  The alleys are not owned by the County and therefore not entitled to public funds being used to fill the numerous potholes.

However, the pavement wasn’t the only thing in ill-repair.  The pipes under them were over 80 years old, cast iron and in need of replacement.  Ventura County Waterworks District 19, which formed in 1980, obtained a USDA low interest loan to replace the aging pipes all through their system.  The pipes run under County Roads, State Highway 118  and the Somis alleys.  Most of the work has already been completed.

At the ceremony Supervisor Parks, District 2, who now represents Somis on the Board of Supervisors, said: “We want to celebrate a major capital project.”  Also in attendance were retiring Water and Sanitation Director Reddy Pakala, Public Works Director Jeff Pratt and County CEO, Mike Powers.

With heavy delivery trucks and extensive use by motorists there is sure to more potholes.  Supervisor Parks closed by saying that the alleys are private roads.  The property owners will have to put aside money for future repairs.
