Rob McCoy: ‘Israel became a theocracy; governed by the law of God’

By Michael Hernandez

(Editor’s Note:  The American Legacy Series continues with a lecture given by Councilman Rob McCoy every Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. at Godspeak Calvary Chapel, 2697 Lavery Court, Suite 14, Newbury Park.  All are welcomed to explore “the origins of our American Government, how it is relevant, and how it is shaping our future.”  This week’s lecture is on Greece’s impact on Western Civilization.)

NEWBURY PARK—“If we look at western heritage, we look at Jerusalem to describe the Israelites and why they are so significant to us and our Constitutional Republic,” said Councilman Rob McCoy at the American Legacy lecture 12.   “If we look at what God does in the Sinai Peninsula in Exodus 19 we (hear) God saying:  ‘If you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you will be my treasure possession.

“God gives (the Jews) laws, a Decalogue (Exodus 20) and laws to govern them.  Israel became a theocracy.  They were now governed by the law of God.

“Did Israel have a king in Exodus 18?  No, they had God.  They had 10 Commandments.  God ruled them.  They were a theocracy.  God made a contract, a binding promise (covenant).

“The law is a check that no king could stand above or outside the law.   The law of God is personal.  All were subject to the law of God, even the king.  This (concept) transformed western culture.

McCoy told American Legacy attendees that it was ironic that as communism fails, western culture embraces socialism—a form of communism.  We are now influenced by a culture that has failed because we have not passed on an inheritance.  McCoy urged lecture attendees to understand western heritage, an understanding of “creation, covenant and king” is needed.

McCoy spoke of the “unique heritage” of the Jews who had their “nation destroyed, temple destroyed, culture gone.”  They were unique because of monotheism—the belief in one God.

“It is our job to pass on our Judeo Christian heritage,” said McCoy.  “The past is the only thing we can see clearly.  Unless we know the past, we are destined to repeat it.”
