Santa Paula: Cardoza found guilty of Assault with a Deadly Weapon
| Today concluded the sentencing phase for Mitchell Cardoza Jr. for the Friday, August 17th, 2015 attempted murder in the 200 block of S. 11th Street. The victim was driving in the 200 block of S. 11th Street when he was shot at for an unknown reason. The victim was not injured however his vehicle sustained damage from the gunfire. The victim contacted officers who began an investigation leading to the arrest of Mitchell Cardoza Jr., now age 19 of Santa Paula. At the time of the crime he was 18 years old.
Mitchell Cardoza Jr. was found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon using a firearm with a gang enhancement. Cardoza Jr. was sentenced to 16 years in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and is required to serve 85% of his time. On Friday, April 17th, 2015 at approximately 9:30 p.m., a lone male victim was driving in the 200 block of South 11th Street when his vehicle was shot at by one, or more, subjects. The victim’s vehicle sustained damage from gunfire, however the victim was not injured. The victim hailed a Santa Paula Police Department officer who was on a traffic stop unrelated to the incident and informed him what had occurred. Officers arrived to the area where the shooting took place and recovered evidence related to the crime. Eyewitnesses contacted police and positively identified the suspects. Search warrants were obtained for two locations in the 200 block of South 11th Street. In the early morning hours of Thursday, April 23rd, 2015, officers from the Santa Paula Police Department and investigators from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office assisted the Santa Paula Police Department SWAT team in serving the warrants at the locations. The four suspects listed above were arrested and booked for attempted murder and shooting at an inhabited vehicle with bail set at $500,000. All those arrested are documented gang members or associates. During the search, officers located numerous items of evidence, including a loaded .357 magnum revolver. All suspects were taken in to custody without incident. No suspects or officers were injured during the operation. This investigation is on-going.
