Santa Paula Man Found Guilty of Assault with a Firearm on Two Peace Officers
VENTURA, California – District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced that a jury found Severiano Arredondo (09/02/94), of Santa Paula, guilty of two counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer. The jury also found that Arredondo personally discharged a firearm during the commission of the crime. The jury did not find that this crime was committed for the benefit of a street gang. In addition, the jury deadlocked on charges of attempted murder on a peace officer.
Just before midnight on June 29, 2012, two Santa Paula Police Department officers were on patrol in a marked police vehicle. The officers called out to Arredondo after he illegally crossed the street. Arredondo continued to walk away from the police officers. After they called out to him again, Arredondo turned and pulled a handgun from his waist area. He aimed the gun at the officers and fired approximately four shots at each officer. One officer dove behind a bush to avoid being shot while the other officer took cover behind his patrol car and returned fire. The patrol car was hit by two of the bullets. Additional officers responded to the shooting and located Arredondo hiding in a nearby apartment complex. Both the Ventura Police Department and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
Further proceedings are set April 11, 2018, at 8:30 a.m. in courtroom 45 of the Ventura Superior Court, County of Ventura. Arredondo faces 36 years 8 months in state prison.

He fired four shots at each officer and the jury deadlocked on attempted murder? Oh, Lord, please spare us from melting Snowflakes. The defendant shouldn’t get a pass just because he is a poor shot. If, in fact, the defendant fired his handgun eight times in the direction of the officers how could any reasonable mind fail to understand that comes as close to attempted murder as one can get without actually killing the victim?
