Santa Paula Ojai Road Natural Gas Leak

August 24, 2017 at 1:41 p.m. a representative from California Resources Corporation completing a quarterly inspection of their six inch gas line, detected abnormal levels of methane gas on Ojai Santa Paula road and contacted fire dispatch and the Southern California Gas Company. Currently Santa Paula Ojai road (Highway 150) is currently closed from Richmond road to Bedford as part of the mandatory evacuations.  

Santa Paula Fire department personnel utilizing gas monitoring equipment were able to confirm abnormally high concentration of natural gas and began evacuating residences in the immediate area. Additional resources were requested from Ventura County fire, including two battalion chiefs, a hazmat chief and an additional county fire engine.  

A natural gas leak was determine to be in the area of Richmond road and Mill Park, in the 700 block of Ojai Santa Paul Road. A six inch gas lines run under Santa Paula Ojai Road owned by Southern California Gas Company.  

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services launched a reverse 911 to the immediate residents and fire personnel began evacuating homes in the mandatory evacuation area. The evacuation area is from Richmond road to Bedford and both sides of Santa Paula Ojai Road. Thirty Eight homes are under mandatory evacuation order and an evacuation shelter was open at the Santa Paula Community Center. A total of 29 individuals took advantage of the shelter. Four individuals are displaced in the immediate vicinity of the leak.

A total of 14 fire fighters responded to the incident, no injuries.
