Santa Paula Pair arrested after High speed vehicle pursuit through Camarillo

Ventura County Sheriff – Incident Press Release

Two subjects have been arrested after leading deputies on a high speed vehicle pursuit which exceeded 100 MPH through the city of Camarillo and the unincorporated areas of Ventura County.

In the evening hours of February 17, 2021, detectives with the Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail (SED) were conducting an investigation into Gregory Nunez. At the time, Nunez was believed to be involved in the illegal sales of drugs and firearms and had an outstanding felony warrant. Detectives located Nunez in a vehicle within the city of Camarillo as he continued onto the northbound US 101 freeway. Camarillo Police Department patrol units responded and attempted to initiate a traffic enforcement stop of the vehicle in the 2600 block of East Ventura Boulevard. The vehicle immediately fled from deputies, reaching speeds of 120 MPH. Additional patrol units responded to assist with the vehicle pursuit, which continued through the unincorporated area of Ventura County.

The vehicle lead deputies at a high rate of speed, as it continued into the Ojai Valley. Ojai Valley patrol units assisted in the pursuit as the suspect vehicle continued. Deputies lost sight of the fleeing vehicle and initiated a search of the surrounding areas in an attempt to locate it. Shortly after, Sheriff’s Communication Center (SCC) reported a possible traffic collision in the area of North Ventura Avenue and Woodland Avenue. Deputies responded to the location and found the fleeing vehicle had been involved in an accident. Deputies contacted Blanca Diaz, who was still seated in the vehicle. Nunez had fled on foot.

As deputies searched the area for Nunez, SCC received several calls about Nunez’ whereabouts. One citizen reported observing the suspect banging on the window of an occupied vehicle in the McDonalds parking lot at 11444 Ventura Avenue, which was believed to be an attempt to get away from law enforcement. Shortly after, deputies located Nunez hiding in a heavy brush area north of the Taco Bell.

Nunez was taken into custody and found to be in possession of illegal drugs. Diaz was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for injuries sustained, as a result of the traffic collision.

Nunez was booked at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility (PTDF) in Ventura for violations of California Penal Code 148(a)(1) – Resisting / Obstructing a Peace Officer in the Discharge of their Duties, California Health and Safety code 11377(a) – Possession of a Controlled Substance and the outstanding felony warrant. Diaz was later arrested for a violation of California Vehicle Code 2800.2 – Reckless Evading.

If anyone has information pertaining to the vehicle or occupants Nunez had attempted to contact in the McDonald’s parking lot, please contact the Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail at (805) 388-5114.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that information from concerned citizens can play a pivotal role in the location and apprehension of dangerous criminals, who pose a threat to the safety of the public. If you have information on any crime, which may help investigators, please call SCC at (805) 654-9511.
