Santa Paula Police Officer Injured arresting Parolee

Santa Paula Police Department – Incident Press Release

On Tuesday May 22, 2018 at approximately 5:05 pm Santa Paula Police officers responded to the 300 block of Laurie Lane for a report of a subject causing a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers located a subject matching the description who was known to officers from prior police contacts as David Hernandez (37 years old) of Santa Paula. The subject was a known parolee and officers attempted to conduct a search pursuant to his parole terms.

Mr. Hernandez refused to be searched and pulled away from the officers. The suspect’s refusal to comply and resistance towards the officers warranted the deployment of pepper spray, which struck the back of his head. Mr. Hernandez fled from the vehicle and after a brief foot pursuit ensued, was ultimately apprehended and taken into custody without incident.

Mr. Hernandez was medically cleared at the Santa Paula Emergency Room as a precautionary measure and was found not injured. However, while Mr. Hernandez was resisting officers, one of the officers sustained an injury. The officer was also treated at the Santa Paula Emergency Room and has been released to full duty.

Mr. Hernandez was later transported to Ventura County Main Jail for section 69 of the Penal Code – obstructing a police officer with officer injury, and section 3056 of the Penal Code – violation of parole.
