Santa Paula | Suspect charged with False Imprisonment/Battery after 2 hour standoff
Santa Paula Police Department – Incident Press Release
On Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 5:42 PM, Santa Paula Police Officers responded to a residence in the 1000 block of E. Ventura St. due to a reported sighting of the suspect, Daniel Duarte (28), from an assault and battery incident a few days before on July 16. Upon arrival to the residence, officers began checking the area for the suspect, at which time it was discovered that he had three outstanding warrants for his arrest: a) for possession of a controlled substance, b) possession of drug paraphernalia and c) driving without a license. Officers spotted the suspect attempting to flee through the back of the residence and began a foot pursuit, which went around the surrounding neighborhood, over fences and through several backyards, at which time a perimeter was setup to secure the area.
Officers eventually discovered the suspect inside a locked laundry room holding a knife and cutting his wrists. An officer attempted to subdue the suspect with a taser gun, but the taser had little effect on the suspect. The suspect then lunged at officers with the knife and charged at them, at which time the officer attempted to subdue 28 year old Santa Paula resident, Daniel Duarte by re-activating the electroshocks of the taser gun with no apparent affect.
Duarte then fled and entered a residence nearby where the suspect offered money for permission to hide in the home. When the mother and daughter of the household attempted to leave, the female juvenile (15 years) was briefly detained by Duarte to prevent them from leaving the premise, but was released once the individual screamed and family members arrived.
Duarte was observed leaving that residence and another foot pursuit ensued, where he ultimately ended up at the original residence where the incident started. The suspect made his way onto several roofs of homes in the area attempting to flee from officers. Duarte broke a second-story window of the residence and entered, at which time nobody else was inside. The suspect ran down stairs and attempted to flee through the front door, however officers had surrounded the building preventing his escape.
Duarte had armed and barricaded himself with two knives, one in each hand, inside of the residence. A Santa Paula Police negotiator was called on scene to persuade Duarte out of the residence. After approximately two hours (8:30 PM) of negotiating with Duarte, he eventually complied with officers and was taken into custody without further incident. After Duarte was taken into custody, he was walked to an ambulance and treated for several self-inflicted wounds to his wrists. He was transported to an emergency room and treated for his injuries and later transported to the Ventura County Main Jail.
The Santa Paula Police and SWAT Team would like to thank the following agencies for the assistance in the incident, including the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department to assist with area containment and air support, Ventura County Fire Department, TEMs and AMR Paramedics
