Santa Paula: Valery Gomez Fire Safety Essay Winner
By Sheryl Hamlin
The Santa Paula Fire Department is known for its many community educational outreach programs, one of which is a tour and class on Fire Safety to all fifth graders both public and private in Santa Paula.
The 2016 winner is Valery Gomez, a student at Glen City school. According to Chief Araiza, Valery’s winning essay touched on all facets of personal and group safety in a fire emergency including how to stay low and put together a family plan.
Shown here are Valery and Chief Araiza. Mayor Hernandez asked Valery what was her favorite part about the training. Her answer: the fire trailer visit. Chief Araiza elaborated that the trailer simulates a house fire with faux smoke.

The family, Valery, SPUSD Superintendent Gamino and Chief Araiza gathered for a picture with the trophy. The trophy will be domiciled at Glen City for one year with Valery’s name inscribed on it. She also received a certificate and a family dinner. The picture of the group was taken by Richard Rudman, a regular council attendee.
