Save Conejo Creek – Camarillo

columnBy Dan Matthews

Another attempt to convert farmland to housing in the Camarillo Area.  As a Realtor, I wonder to what benefit this is to the current residents.  More houses will reduce the value of our current inventory.  It will increase traffic on our local streets and the 101 highway.  Just because we have had a pretty good amount of rain this does not mean that we have enough to sustain more growth.  The Save Conejo Creek organization has sent out the following, if you are fore or against, please attend and listen or sign up to speak yourself. The meeting is Wednesday the 25th at City Hall in Camarillo on Carmen.  7:30 pm.

City Council Meeting

Wednesday, January 25

7:30 PM

ONCE AGAIN we will be out in front to greet you.  We have NOT AGAIN!stickers for you to wear on your shirts so the council can see we are still united!

The Camarillo City Council will be considering a General Plan Amendment for a Calleguas Land Co. development called “Adohr Lane” on 447 acres of prime farmland in the Conejo Creek area. This is the same company that has filed a lawsuit to invalidate our recently passed Camarillo SOAR Measure J. This is the same major player in the very unpopular Conejo Creek development that was rescinded in 2014.

This would be the first step ONCE AGAIN to convert the farmland at the bottom of the Conejo Grade (our Camarillo Gateway) into housing.

Read last Thursday’s VCStar Article on this 4th attempt to develop this highly prized land.

“The City Council, at its discretion, may order the application to be processed or may terminate processing proceedings at this point.” –  Procedure section for General Plan Amendments

But we need to let the Council know that just as the landowner’s plans to develop this land (zoned for agriculture) have not changed, neither has our resolve.

It will be a long night as there will be 6 General Plan amendments being considered, including a request to develop the Camarillo  Golf Course. Accordingly we are asking all who can, to stay for the entire meeting to show our support for all of those who are present.  View the 6  General Plan Amendments  and the Agenda Report.

  1. You do not need to speak at the hearing, your presence will speak volumes.
  1. It is very helpful for the Council to hear directly from its citizens. You can do this by speaking during the comment period, or if you would rather submit written comments you can fill out a comment card (both speaker and comment cards will be available in the Council Chamber’s prior to the start of the meeting).
  1. Sending an email to the council members is also very effective. They do keep count of all the pro and con comments they receive on a particular topic: [email protected]

IF WE FILL EVERY SEAT and SPEAK the City Council will be much more likely to deny the General Plan Amendment referral and stop this latest development proposal from going any further.

Please mark your calendar and join us at City Hall.

Thank-you so very much for your support…we look forward to seeing you there!

These same people ignore the need for housing. They also might be the same people that would criticize the current federal administration for being isolationists while locally doing the same. It’s an “I’ve got mine, get yours somewhere else” attitude that extends to those backing SOAR.
