SCIART Opens Call for Entries for The NEXT Big Thing

CAMARILLO, CAStudio Channel Islands Arts Center (SCIART) invites artists to participate in the call for entries for SCIART’s exhibition, The NEXT Big Thing.  The annual exhibition is an exciting showcase of contemporary art created by emerging artists, as well as nationally exhibited and award-winning artists, in all medium including video, film, performance, sound and installation art. This year’s show will be juried by art critic and journalist Leah Ollman. The exhibition will award three cash prizes. The deadline for artists to apply is July 12, 2020.

Ollman writes about the visual arts for the Los Angeles Times, Art in America and numerous other publications. She was a correspondent for ARTnews for ten years, has written more than 800 reviews and features for the LA Times and 85 articles for Art in America, as well as numerous reviews published in Photograph, Craft, Art on Paper, Ceramics, ARTnews, Art Nexus, Afterimage and High Performance. Her books and exhibition catalogues include Alison Rossiter: Expired Paper, William Kentridge: Weighing…and Wanting, The Photographs of John Brill, Michal Chelbin: Strangely Familiar, and Camera as Weapon: Worker Photography Between the Wars. Ollman has been a Hambidge Fellow in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018. She holds an M.A. in art history from The Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.

The Next Big Thing is always full of surprises; we attract exhibitors from across the nation and present an amazing range of artworks in this exhibition. It is also the most complex exhibition to hang, often with sculptural work suspended from the ceiling or cantilevered from the walls, installation pieces and floor-based work,” said SCIART Executive Director Peter Tyas.

The NEXT Big Thing exhibition will open on Aug. 1, 2020 in SCIART’s Blackboard Gallery located at 2222 E. Ventura Blvd., Camarillo. Admission is free. Sponsorships are available. For more information, visit studiochannelislands.com or call (805) 383-1368.
