We are grateful for all of your support, and look forward to continuing to promote our mission throughout the month of May. Grades: All Grades
    Standards: 5-LS2-1, MS-ESS2-1
Description: Plants benefit from a boost of energy and nutrients every now and then, just as we do. While you can’t give your plants a gummy vitamin or a cup of coffee and expect them to perk up, there are a number of household items that may be lying around your home that can greatly benefit your plants. This activity explores why farmers use fertilizers and how the nutrients contained within them benefit plants. It also offers some helpful hints on how you can use leftover household items as fertilizer to ensure your plants stay healthy and grow strong.

    Grades: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
    Standards: K-ESS3-1
Description: Many of us take a trip to the grocery store to get our favorite fruits and vegetables, but might not know whether they were grown underground, on a tree, or on a bush. While we may know that a carrot is a root vegetable and that apples grow on trees, it’s not so obvious when we aren’t harvesting them ourselves. This fun craft will help you get a better understanding on which fruits and veggies are grown underground and which are grown on the surface.

    Grades: 3rd
Description: From Mystery Science. In this Mystery, students learn how and why flowers are pollinated. In the activity, Make a Flower, students make flower models out of paper and bee models out of pipe cleaners. Students fly their bees from flower to flower and observe what happens to the flower’s pollen during this process. Watch a 30 minute exploration video, then do a quick activity to learn more! Free print outs are available on the website, click the link in the title.

    Grades: Elementary
    Standards: K-ESS3-1
Description: Farmers do much more than just tend to crops. They have to understand the weather to protect their crops from extreme changes such as freezing temperatures or extreme heat. They work as engineers and mechanics to build irrigation lines and operate heavy machinery. Farmers even have to understand how to be business managers to organize networks to sell their crops and keep farm workers paid. These are just a few jobs farmers have in addition to planting, growing and harvesting the food that we love. This activity explores the many exciting and challenging roles farmers have to do to keep their farms functioning. So grab your markers and explore the many hats a farmer wears to make sure that food gets from their farm to your table.
    Harvest of the Week:
    Celery!
Fun Facts About Celery: 1. Celery has been used as a medicinal plant to treat a toothache, insomnia, gout, rheumatism, anxiety, and arthritis.
    2. Celery seeds are used as a spice.
    3. Celery can reach heights of over 3 feet!
    4. The darker the color of the stalk, the strong their flavor will be.
    5. Celery is an important food source of conventional antioxidant nutrients, including vitamin C, beta-carotene, and manganese.Forget ants on a log, check out these fun recipes for celery snails and caterpillars!
    Grades: All Grades
    Standards: 2.7.3.N
Description: A smoothie is a sweet treat that you can enjoy everyday and get healthier by doing it. This activity will help you craft a smoothie that includes a rainbow of fruits and vegetables with the roll of a dice. Fruits and vegetables come in a variety of different colors, and each color does something important for our bodies. By blending together your favorite fruits and vegetables, you can create dozens of different blends at home while giving your body the nutrients it craves.

    Games and Activities
    Grades: All Grades
    Standards: 2.7.2.N
Description: If you have ever attended one of SEEAG’s Nutrition Presentations, you might recall that we end each presentation with an exciting activity called Master Chef Jr. Three teams compete with one another in front of their class to create a healthy, yet creative snack that will “WOW” the audience. This activity is a blast, but it doesn’t have to be done at a school even with a partner. You can do this activity from the comfort of your own home, as long as you have some fruits, vegetables and building materials (we use toothpicks). This is a wonderful activity and we encourage you to get together a rainbow of fruits and vegetables and make a creation of your own.
Provivi is developing natural, affordable pheromone products to control pests and to protect crops like corn, rice, and soybeans – and was started in Santa Monica, CA. Pheromones serve as highly selective attractants for insects, which control damaging pests while preserving beneficial insects.
