    Grades: 3-5
Description: How do you define the word agriculture? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary states that it is the “science, art, or practice of cultivating the soil, producing crops, and raising livestock and in varying degrees the preparation and marketing of the resulting products.” An accurate definition, but this definition doesn’t impart the integral nature or importance of agricultural products—food, clothing, and shelter—in our daily lives. Surely there is a better way to define agriculture!Students use the visual representation of a web to explore the role of agriculture in their daily lives and understand how most of the necessities of life can be traced back to the farm.

    Grades: All Grades
Description: When you eat a strawberry, which part of the plant are you eating? If you enjoy eating fruits and vegetables, it’s fun to use our brains to figure out which plant part we are eating. Plants provide not only us, but most of the animals on this planet with food, oxygen, medicine, and shelter that we all need to survive. The more we know about plants the more we can learn about all that they do to provide for life on this planet. So let’s work together to figure out which plant parts you have around your home.

    Harvest of the Week:
    Bell Peppers!
Fun Facts About Bell Peppers: 1. Since bell peppers have seeds and come from flowering plants, they are actually fruits, not vegetables.
    2. The bell pepper is the only member of the pepper family that does not produce capsaicin, the “spicy” chemical in most peppers.
    3. A bell pepper has the highest levels of Vitamin C of any produce item. A large red pepper provides more than 300% of your daily requirement of Vitamin C.
    4. Bell peppers can be eaten at any stage of development, however the vitamin C and carotenoid content of bell peppers increases with ripeness.
    5. Red/yellow/orange bell peppers are simply green bell peppers that have been left on the vine to continue to ripen.Want to pick up some locally grown peppers? Check out these road side stands and farmers markets in Ventura County!

    Spell your name workout activity!
While it’s not easy getting exercise when we are stuck at home, it is important to make an effort to get our bodies moving. Exercise helps keep stress levels down, helps with concentration and can even help boost our immune systems. This activity is quick and easy and all you need is your name. Each letter of the alphabet has an exercise assigned to it. Simply do each workout assigned to each letter of your name and you are well on your way to a healthier day.Cal Fresh Food Assistance Flyers Visit the VCCWI’s web page for more resources and activities!
