EMMY NOMINATED COMEDIAN-WRITER-PRODUCER JIM O’DOHERTY TO TEACH COMEDY TV WRITING WORKSHOP WHERE THE WINNING PILOT SCRIPT MAY BE PRODUCED
The Christian Entertainment Guild announced today that acclaimed television producer-writer Jim O’Doherty (known for 3rd ROCK FROM THE SUN, Disney’s KICKIN’ IT) will join in the CEG Mentorship Workshops to teach writing for television. In O’Doherty’s CEG Comedy Writers Workshop he will share his unique talent for creating comedic television shows within 10 Saturday workshop sessions starting June 2, 2018 in Westlake Village, CA (10:00 AM at Calvary Community Church) plus a closed Writers Room day for semi-finalists by invitation only. The workshop will cover topics including How To Write For Television, Where Stories Come From, Twists & Turns, How To Create a 1-Sheet, How To Put Together A Television Pilot, Character Development, Pacing, Writing Dialogue, How To Pitch, The Pitch Session, Inside the Writers Room (what it looks like on a studio show), and Table Reading. Based on submissions within the workshop, writers may progress to semi-finalists who will work to co-create a TV pilot that may be produced as either a pilot or sizzle reel. CEG Comedy Writing Semi-Finalists will work closely with O’Doherty and special guests to develop their scripts actively through the Writers Room process as found in the real world of network television.
Jim O’Doherty is an Emmy nominated, renowned comedy show runner-creator-writer-producer of over 300 episodes of television. He created and executive produced Disney XD’s #1 comedy hit, KICKIN’ IT, an American martial arts-inspired television series that follows the karate instructor at an under-performing martial arts academy, played by Jasone Earles and his five misfit students, including Olivia Holt. O’Doherty created/exec produced Disney’s GAMER’S GUIDE TO PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING, a live-action comedy starring Cameron Boyce, a teenage pro-gaming wonder boy whose thumb injury forces him off the elite pro gaming circuit and back to public school. According to Disney, Gamer’s Guide To Pretty Much Anything scored the No. 1 debut among boys 6-11. O’Doherty’s series credits also include Fox’s GROUNDED FOR LIFE and NBC’s 3rd ROCK FROM THE, THE TRACY MORGAN SHOW and Nickelodeon’s musical comedy HOW TO ROCK based on Meg Haston’s book.
Launched by the Christian Entertainment Guild, the CEG Mentorship Program and its CEG Comedy Writers Workshop provides learning and mentorship opportunities with world-renowned veteran entertainment industry professionals for the next generation to learn from the wisdom of seasoned professionals. The goal is to help writers become excellent story tellers and content creators whose works are relevant to pop culture.
