Sidebar to the Debate: Interview with Chris Matthews at the Reagan Library

Publisher George Miller interviewed veteran newsman Chris Matthews

Q: Are there any candidates here you would support?
A: John Kasich, who said has always been responsible. (he then told an anecdote of playing basketball with him)

Q. What do you think of Donald Trump?
A: He’s SMART.

Q: Is he a real Conservative?
A: He’s a BUSINESSMAN. Some think that’s Conservative, BUT. … He’s a deal maker. I just hope he doesn’t have to mess up with a Bay of Pigs. He might have to learn on the job like others.

Q Do you think immigration is the biggest issue or is the economy, or…?
A: For him (Trump) it is. That’s what got him the best results (or words to that effect).

Q: Is it the biggest campaign issue?
A; Something has to be done about it. Enforce the law. Paraphrased: No jobs to illegals, enforce the border.

Q: What about the “path to Citizenship?”
A: Yeah, that too. Immigration reform.

Q: But who should be let in? (He never really answered the question and that is a big one.)

(Donald Trump wants to send illegals home, then bring back the good ones,” but he never says what the criteria would be, Some other GOP candidates want to grant residence or work permits widely, amounting to a large partial amnesty. Carson, Christie and others are examples of that.)

A. Citizenship should be VALUED.

In passing Mr. Mathews mentioned that he was once a Capitol policeman.
