Simi Valley Fatality Collision within first 2 hours of 2017. Off-Duty LAPD Officer is victim of crash

Simi Valley Police Department – Incident Press Release

In the early morning hours of 2017, Simi Valley Police Officers responded to the 35th call for service of the year which proved to be tragic. An injury collision occurred at the intersection of Cochran Street and Sycamore Drive which left 3 people injured and another killed as a result of the collision. Sadly, we are reporting an off-duty Los Angeles Police Officer named Heather Monroe, 30 years- old of Simi Valley, was a passenger in the vehicle and did not survive the collision. Preliminary investigation indicates that Ms. Monroe was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Although the exact cause of the collision is still being determined, it appears that one of the vehicles failed to stop for a red light. The driver of the second vehicle in the collision was being driven by an UBER driver who had a fare in the vehicle. Both drivers and the UBER passenger received non-life threatening injuries and were treated at a local hospital.

The Simi Valley Police Traffic Bureau will be doing additional investigation into the exact cause of the collision and whether alcohol or drugs played a role. We are seeking help from any one who was in the area at the time who may have witnessed the collision. The Los Angeles Police Department was notified and assisted Simi Valley Police Investigators with logistical issues involving notification to the next of kin as well as their own personnel. Their assistance was greatly appreciated.

Simi Valley suffered 6 fatal collisions in 2016 and nearly lost one of their own Motorcycle Officers in another serious crash. It is our biggest wish this year as we look toward a positive future that all our drivers will drive a little slower; pay close attention to the traffic laws and be courteous to each other so we can avoid a repeat number of fatal collisions in 2017. We appreciate that one of the injured parties in this collision was utilizing UBER to get home after consuming alcohol during a New Year’s Eve celebration. Please don’t drink and drive or use drugs and drive.

The investigation on scene lasted 11 hours and the roadway is now open.

This is all the information the Simi Valley Police Department will be releasing at this time as the investigation is ongoing. There will be no further statements until the investigation is complete.
