Simi Valley Physician Pleads Guilty to Selling Controlled Substance

William Matzner, M.D. (DOB 12/31/58), a Simi Valley-based internal medicine/primary care doctor who was granted a medical license by the Medical Board of California in 1986, has plead guilty to one count of selling the opiate oxycodone, a controlled substance, in violation of Health & Safety Code section 11352(a), a felony.

On June 21, 2017, Dr. Matzner admitted unlawfully selling oxycodone from April 2, 2013, through August 7, 2014, from his Simi Valley office.  Dr. Matzner surrendered his Drug Enforcement Administration registration, and as such may no longer prescribe controlled substances to patients.  His ability to maintain his medical license is currently under review by the Medical Board of California.

The charges stem from an investigation by the Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit, a task force comprised of members from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Simi Valley Police Department, thousand Oaks Police Department, Medical Board of California, California Department of Health Care Services and the California Highway Patrol, and the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation. The primary mission of the task force is combating the transfer of legal prescription medication to the illegal market.  The task force aggressively targets medical doctors who are unlawfully prescribing opiates and other painkillers, which may lead to overdose.  Overdose has been determined to be the leading cause of death in individuals in the United States under the age of 50.

Sentencing is scheduled August 14, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom 26 of the Ventura Superior Court, County of Ventura. Dr. Matzner faces a maximum sentence of 365 days in jail.  Anyone with

information regarding illegal prescribing practices is encouraged to contact the Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit at (805) 383-8700, or by e-mail at [email protected].
