Tprescription arial, click sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;”>he Simi Valley Historical Society is inviting everyone to attend their second annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival.  This event will take place on Sunday, October 30th, from 2PM – 7PM, at Strathearn Historical Park & Museum.

Día de los Muertos is traditionally a three day celebration running from October 31st to November 2nd.  It is a celebration where deceased loved ones are remembered and revered. Families build altars in their homes commemorating lost loved ones and celebrate their lives.

These days, Day of the Dead altars are also created in libraries, museums and classrooms in both Mexico and the United States, as a way of honoring Mexican traditions and encouraging cross-cultural understanding.

The October 30th festival will feature live music by Mariachi Camarillo, dancers from Grupo Folklórico Viva México de Simi Valley, Aztec dancers from Danza Tlaloc Ollin and Danza Mexica Cuauhtemoc, live performances, storytelling, Día de los Muertos craft vendors, crafts for all ages to try: masks, tissue flowers, papel picado, face painting and food vendors.

Building a  Día de los Muertos altar is an important part of celebrating Mexico’s most famous holiday. They can be relatively simple as one might display photographs and mementos that reflect their loved ones character and personality; what matters is the act of honoring and remembering them.

Altars created by local families will be on display and there will also be altars for visitors to contribute to.  Anyone interested in building an altar can email[email protected] for details.  For information about how to build an altar check out this helpful site: http://www.art-is-fun.com/dia-de-los-muertos-altar

Strathearn Park is at 137 Strathearn Place (behind the Madera Target store).  Tickets are available online (recommended!) at https://svhs.ticketleap.com/diadelosmuertos/ and at the gate: $7 Adults, $5 Kids age 5-12.  For additional information call 805-526-6453
