    Discovering a community
    of the theater obsesseds

My life took a lovely turn the day that my best friend, Wendy Babb, and I walked into auditions for Gypsy at CPT in 2011. We had met getting our theater BFA’s over 20 years before, and our paths had paralleled—working professionally in Los Angeles, then moving to Thousand Oaks to raise children, putting performing on hold. I had switched from performing to directing, so that audition was my first time singing in public for over 15 years. We were both cast, and the local theater community has been an outlet and refuge for us ever since.

I’ve been lucky enough to perform five times on the CPT stage – Rose in Gypsy, Muzzy in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Phyllis in Follies, Barbara in Social Security, and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd.  These have been wonderful opportunities. But as important as the joy generated creating those productions, was the discovery of a caring local community of the theater obsessed.

CPT is currently giving me another amazing opportunity to get back to what I love even more than performing – directing.

Daddy Long Legs, our area’s first musical since lockdown, is a joyous creation. Based on a book written in 1914 by Jean Webster (Mark Twain’s niece), this story of spirited orphan Jerusha Abbott and her mysterious benefactor has endured through the decades. While this concept has since become a trope, few have matched the original for wit, exuberance, and a keenly observed slice of a fascinating life. This newest adaptation brings a wonderful theatricality and extraordinarily beautiful music.

What will be unique with our own production is the deliberate hybridization of live theater presented through video. The nature of the piece lends itself exceedingly well to our current theatrical reality, and a wonderfully talented and dedicated production team are doing interesting, creative work to bring this presentation to life. With the addition of amazing live musicians, it promises to be a wonderful evening of theater for you and your couch.

With this show, a new chapter emerges for me. By unanimous decision, Wendy’s daughter Lilli won the role of Jerusha. Back for lockdown from working professionally in New York, she returns to the stage she performed on as a child. She brings a glorious voice and an extraordinary connection to the character. She is joined by Jared Price, last seen (hilariously) in CPT’s streamed version of Reduced Shakespeare (Abridged). A vocal teacher and music director himself, he also brings an extraordinary voice and detailed character work. I am very fortunate to have these talented, generous and skilled actors making up our cast.

I have been lucky enough to win awards and be spotlighted for my directing in Los Angeles. As I write at this halfway point in the rehearsal process, Daddy Long Legs has the potential to be among the best that I have done. Don’t miss it!
