Working to Keep Public Safe from Suspected Impaired Drivers
Oxnard, Calif. – While many of us have been staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oxnard Police Department is reminding everyone who does need to drive to do so while sober.
To protect you and your family, the Oxnard Police Department will have additional officers on patrol every Friday and Saturday night from Aug. 21 through the Labor Day weekend (Sept. 7) looking for suspected impaired drivers. The increased efforts to address impaired driving are part of a national enforcement campaign, Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over.
In addition to patrols, the Oxnard Police Department will hold DUI Checkpoints on August 21and September 4 from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city of Oxnard.
While less people are traveling, impaired driving continues to be a problem. During the 4th of July holiday, the CHP made 738 arrests for DUI over a 54-hour period.
Driving while impaired is illegal, whether it is alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications or marijuana.
If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a “may cause drowsiness” or other driving warning label, plan on staying home. If you see someone driving impaired, call 911.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
