Surfer paddles into shore just in time to catch thief breaking into her car

Saturday, January 9th, 11:57am, a surfer saw the suspect, Gordon Gleason, 59 years from Ventura, looking inside of her car, which was parked in the parking adjacent to the beach. The victim paddled back to shore, and by the time she reached the parking lot, Gleason had opened all four doors of the car and was inside of the vehicle rummaging through the car. The victim confronted the suspect, grabbed him to prevent him from leaving and held him until responding officers arrived.

The suspect was detained by officers, and at the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined he had found the victim’s hidden keys and accessed the locked car with them. Gleason was later booked at Ventura County Jail for Vehicle Burglary. The victim did sustain a minor injury during the incident, but medical aid was not necessary. The suspect was not injured.

As a reminder to those who use the parking lot near Surfer’s Point or similar surfing locations: criminals will often check areas commonly used to hide vehicle keys, then use them to access locked vehicles and steal items. It is recommended that after you lock you vehicle, you remain in possession of your keys to prevent this from occurring.
