Suspect arrested for Dealing Fentanyl in Thousand Oaks | One Victim Overdosed and Died

Ventura County Sheriff – Incident Press Release

Shane Spring

On April 12th 2018, detectives from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit (PCU) assisted by the Thousand Oaks Directed Enforcement Unit (DEU) concluded a two month narcotic investigation into Shane Spring, who was involved in the sales of suspected Fentanyl to residents of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. Spring is suspected of being the source of supply of Fentanyl to lower level street dealers that then resold the Fentanyl in the city of Thousand Oaks. This Fentanyl was eventually consumed by a victim who later overdosed and died.

Detectives located and detained Spring in Culver City and served a signed search warrant at his residence. During this investigation detectives were able to seize approximately 4 ounces of suspected Fentanyl, a Glock 19 firearm and a large sum of U.S. currency deemed to be proceeds of narcotic sales.

Spring was booked into custody at the Ventura County Sheriff’s East County Jail facility for 11351 H&S – possession for sale of a controlled substance and 29800 PC – possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

On April 16th, 2018, this case was forwarded to the District Attorney’s office for review. The District Attorney’s office elected to file one count of 11351 H&S and one count of 29800 PC.

The Ventura County Interagency Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit is a task force made up of members from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Thousand Oaks Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, the Simi Valley Police Department, and the Ventura Police Department. The primary mission of the task force is combatting the transfer of legal prescription medication to the illegal market. In addition, the task force works to identify and stop new trends of abuse among the younger population and investigates overdoses due to both prescription medication and illicit drug use.
