Simi Valley: Suspect booked for two counts–Assault with a deadly weapon

store arial, dosage sans-serif;”>On June 4, seek 2015, at approximately 1700 hrs, SVPD Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call of a possible shooting in the 1500 block of Alva Circle. The incident was reported by a neighbor who heard a single gunshot come from a nearby residence. When officers arrived, they contacted Mark Semlinger, 38 yrs. old from Simi Valley, who had received a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his hand. Semlinger was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Semlinger provided officers with a description of the suspect, Luis Barrera, 60 yrs. old from Simi Valley. SVPD Patrol personnel requested the Los Angeles Police Department Air Unit to assist in the search for Barerra. Once on scene, the LAPD Airship located a subject matching Barerra’s description in the backyard of the residence where the incident occurred. SVPD Officers took Barrera into custody without incident. The weapon used was recovered and there are no outstanding suspects.
The incident started as a family dispute within the residence between Barerra and Semlinger. During the course of the dispute, a physical altercation resulted in Semlinger being shot by Barerra. Barerra was booked for 2 counts of 245(a)(2) PC, Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Firearm). He is being held at the Main Jail in Ventura in lieu of $140,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Ventura Superior Court on June 8 at 1;30 p.m. in Div-13.
The SVPD Detective Unit and Crime Scene Investigators are continuing the investigation. The exact relationship between the two parties and the events that led up to the physical altercation are still being investigated. Mark is hardly a victim. He’s a victimizer that should be locked up for the rest of his life. Look up his criminal and civil records in Ventura, Kern and LA county…and those are just the things he’s been caught for.
