2015 annual Ventura County Farm Day featured over 20 farms: Saturday, September 26!


Discover California agriculture first hand and learn about fun farm-specific facts and specialties at SEEAG’s third annual Ventura County Farm Day on Saturday, September 26, 2015. This free event welcomes visitors to enjoy both guided and self-guided tours, hands-on activities and educational demonstrations from over 20 working farms in Ventura County, followed by a ticketed outdoor BBQ at Limoneira Ranch.

A perfect family event, Ventura County Farm Day is free to attend at participating Ventura County farms and will showcase the following farms and activities:

Houweling’s Tomatoes: This family-owned farm produces hot house tomatoes and cucumbers hydroponically, as well as over 13.2 kilowatts of power – enough electricity to sell back to the grid.
McGrath Family Farm: Pick certified organic strawberries or shop McGrath Family Farm’s roadside farmer’s market right off the 101 Freeway. The McGraths have been farming their land for five generations, since 1868.


Chivas Skin Care: Meet goats, pigs, tortoises and chickens and learn how to hand craft goat milk soaps at this nationally recognized farm and skin care company.
Bartels Ranch: Enjoy a cup of fresh-squeezed organic Valencia orange juice and learn about growing oranges organically.
Otto & Sons Nursery: Tour the immense rose gardens, fruit orchards, berry farms and landscape shrubbery of Otto & Sons Nursery, featuring over 800 varieties of plant life.


East End Eden Farm: Discover a permaculture food forest, an entire ecosystem in one place that showcases sustainable farm design, and meet Farmer Connor Love Jones.
Friends Ranch: Enjoy blind taste tests of fresh-squeezed orange juice and discover Ojai’s citrus history as you squeeze your own cup of real orange juice at this 100 year-old family citrus ranch.
Ojai Valley Olive Oil: Tour the olive press house and taste premium cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil from a heritage grove dating back to 1880.


AGQ Laboratory: Tour this high-tech lab that specializes in food safety and agriculture.
Deardorff Family Farms: Sample fresh produce and embark on a guided tour through this LEED Certified, sustainable operation that has been farming since 1937.
Duda Farm Fresh Foods: The Duda family has been farming since 1909, and is offering walking tours of their grounds, including a viewing of the state-of-the-art, fresh-cut celery processing facility.
Gills Onions: One of the largest onion farms in the nation, Gills Onions can boast a 100% waste-free processing plant by turning onion waste into biofuel to generate electricity.
San Miguel Produce: This packing facility boasts a vertically-integrated grower and a fresh-cut processor, specializing in dark, leafy greens.


Santa Paula
Limoneira Ranch: One of the world’s largest lemon and avocado providers, Limoneira will offer hay rides and tours of their historic visitor’s center. The end-of-day BBQ will be held here on the north lawn starting at 4 p.m.
UC Hansen Ag Center: An approved Ventura County Master Gardener Program site, this center is very active in agricultural education outreach. The site will also be hosting the Farm Day Mercantile.
Agromin: Visitors can learn about green waste recycling, healthy soils, food waste to bio-fuel and sustainable agricultural practices. Agromin will be hosted at Limoneira Ranch.
Rincon-Vitova Insectary: Learn about how beneficial insects can help combat agricultural pests for sustainable agricultural practices. Rincon-Vitova will be located at Limoneira Ranch for Farm Day.
The Painted Pony Farm: Enjoy activities such as wool washing, goat milk soap making, apple pruning, seed collecting and apple picking.


Petty Ranch: Meet and greet with the Petty Ranch farmers and pick your own citrus, avocados, figs and other specialty fruits.

Underwood Family Farms: Explore the Somis Farm Animal Center and meet donkeys, goats, alpacas and rabbits, and enjoy a variety of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Greenwood Daylily Gardens: Experience the beauty of the hundreds of varieties of plants that they grow at Greenwood. From daylilies, to irises, to geraniums, and more–everything is carefully selected to best meet the needs of a variety of California landscapes.


This year, Ventura County Farm Day will also feature the new Farm Day Mercantile Hub at Hansen Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The Mercantile Hub will host a collection of local artisanal vendors displaying their goods and demonstrating the beautiful products that can be created from the raw bounty grown by our farmers. The market will include meat curers, bread makers, goat milk soaps, honey, jam, pickles, chocolate and more.

After tour hours have concluded, attendees are invited to enjoy a rustic outdoor BBQ from 4-9 p.m. at Limoneira Ranch in Santa Paula. The BBQ will feature live music by Grammy Award-winning artist Todd Hannigan, a kiss-the-farmer photo booth, tractor rides, gourmet salads prepared by farm-to-table Chef Jason Collis, craft beers from Poseidon Brewing Company, small-batch wines from Four Brix Winery and barbeque fired up by the Young Farmers & Ranchers of Ventura County.

Ventura County Farm Day will take place on Saturday, September 26 with over 20 farms in Ventura County. Self-driven and guided farm tours are free from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tickets to the Limoneira BBQ are available for purchase online now. Tickets will also be sold at the door while supplies last. BBQ tickets are $35 for adults and include all activities, dinner and one alcoholic beverage. Children’s tickets, for attendees ages 12 and under, are available for $15. Founded in 2008, Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG) aims to help young students truly understand the origins of their food by bridging the gap between agriculture and consumption through its agricultural education programming. SEEAG’s Farm to Table – The Journey of Our Food From Field to Fork program based in Ventura County teaches elementary school children about the origins of their food from field to table, and the importance of local farmland by providing schools with classroom agricultural education and free field trips to farms.
