The Addams Family opens in Ojai March 11th

look arial,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;”>You’ve heard of “Meet the Parents,” now there’s even a more hilarious and offbeat play where you can “Meet the Addams Family” — in person, to the sound of music, no less.
It’s “The Addams Family” musical where cartoonist Charles Addams’ famed New Yorker panels come to life and limb starting March 11 through April 3 at Ojai ACT.

Meet the parents, Gomez and Morticia, along with Uncle Fester, Grandma Addams, the kids Wednesday and Pugsley and manservant Lurch. It seems the teen-aged Wednesday has a boyfriend named Lucas whose ‘normal’ father and mother, Mal and Alice, want to meet the parents … and the fun begins with hilarious and discordant results.

Veteran director and theater teacher Gai Jones is serious about this comical story, unearthing a tale “about families who support and love each other … about how our past (ancestors) are in our lives and also about how important love is.”

There is also a plethora of Addams’ ancestors haunting the stage along with off-beat characters and a lot of love within the cast and crew because of numerous family members participating.
This will be a unique production mixing the generations. The adults run the evening shows Fridays and Saturdays and the Sunday matinees, but on the Saturday matinees, the youth take over the lead characters.

“We believe in working together,” Jones said, “I’m thankful to be working with the professionals who support the intergenerational concept of youth and adults on stage and learning from each other.”

While the public may be most familiar with movie and television versions of the Addams Family, this highly successful Broadway version comes straight from the original cartoons. As one of the creators (Julian Crouch) related: “If Fester was going to do a Broadway show, what kind of Broadway show would he do?” The answer: “an off-beat take on 19th Century Gothic,” a genre which added romance in the spirit of Frankenstein and Dracula.

“The Addams Family” musical runs from March 11 to April 3 at Ojai ACT, 113 S. Montgomery St., at an earlier-than-usual time, 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. The Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. features youth taking over the lead characters. Tickets are only $18 general, $12 for seniors, students and Art Center members and $5 for youth 12 and under.
