The California Wine Club – Delivering Great Wine to Your Door for Nearly 25 Years

By Raven West

Wine, wine everywhere …. there’s wine up and down the California coast and not nearly enough time for wine lovers to try every one.

Chris and Pam Boring, founders of The California Wine Club, located right here in Oxnard have the solution. They travel the world tasting, selecting and bringing home selected wines from artesian wineries then ship them right to your door!

Chris and Pam started the club in 1990 primarily out of frustration. They would go to the store, buy wine, take it home, be disappointed and dump it down the drain. They realized the wines they liked best were either what their friends recommended or what they drank when they visited wineries, but there wasn’t always a way to buy these wines at local markets. Then, a vacation trip up the Coast changed everything.

“The idea for a wine club originated in 1990 when the Borings were on a weekend trip in Mendocino County,” Gerri-Lynn Becker, Director of Operations explained. “They visited Handley Cellars, and really loved the wine, but when Chris asked the winemaker Milla Handley where she could purchase the wine in Ventura County, Milla said the Handley was a small winery and they didn’t really make enough to distribute outside of their tasting room, so the only place Chris could buy their wine was at their winery.

“That was a big light bulb moment for the Borings. They realized that there were  probably hundreds of wine makers hand crafting fabulous wines in limited amounts all over California that couldn’t be distributed or available in stores outside of the winery. That’s how the club started and that’s what we’ve been doing ever since. We focus on small mom and pop artesian working wineries.”

While it’s true that all of the local wineries on the Ventura County Wine Trail have their own individual wine clubs, Becker says that The California Wine Club isn’t in competition with local winery club members. In fact, it’s much more of a partnership. Many of the Club’s members are also members of local winery clubs, but The California Wine Club gives wine lovers a wider range of wines to enjoy.

“When you’re a California Wine Club member it’s like you’re a member of thirteen different wineries’ wine clubs because every four weeks you get something different. So it’s a different experience than just belonging to one winery club. Over the course of a year we’ll feature 160 different wines from small family owned wineries who we work with up close and personal.” Becker said.

CAWineClubThe California Wine Club features five different club levels so there’s something for every taste and every budget. There’s the Premier Series, which is their original and most popular club, the Signature Series is a selection of limited production wines with a 90+ point ratings , and The Aged Cabernet Series that features Napa Valley Cabernets aged 8-12 years.

For wine lovers who want a taste of something outside of California, the Club offers their Pacific Northwest Series featuring two award-winning wines handcrafted by some of Oregon and Washington’s best small family wineries. And for wine enthusiasts who want a taste of the world, the International Wine Club offers different wines from heralded wine-making countries like France, Germany, Australia, Argentina and South Africa.

In addition to the wine, members also receive a copy of “Uncorked,” a detailed guide to the wine, the story of the winery, tasting notes and tips and even recipes, so that when the member is at home and gets their shipment they not only have great wine, but they also get to know all about the winery where the wines are from.

Unlike local wineries that only produce a select number of varietals and blends, The California Wine Club’s inventory is always changing because they feature a new winery every month. If for some reason a member doesn’t like the wine, the Club will immediately send a replacement or refund the member’s money. And a member can cancel at any time without penalty.

“It’s a fabulous way to expand your wine horizons, to taste wines you might never thought about trying or had the opportunity to because the winery is located far away and the wine is only available for purchase at that location,” Becker added.

Although there isn’t any wine tasting on the premises, The California Wine Club participates in local events such as the Taste of Camarillo and the Camarillo Wine Walk where they pour tastings from their selected winery.

Wine, wine, everywhere — there’s wine and with membership in The California Wine Club, you’ll now have the time to try them all!
