The elderly woman and her gun

Editorial

With all this talk about gun control, I want to convey an experience I had last month. I was doing construction renovations on a quadraplex in a rough neighborhood off  Crenshaw Blvd in Los Angeles. I was there all week and became friends with the tenants, in particularl, this 83 year old woman and her retired son who came everyday to check on her and make sure she ate.

At the end of each day I would buy some beers and share them on the front porch with the locals and talk with them for an hour or two. Now I have been working in this neighborhood on and off for about ten years. Over the last decade, the neighborhood has gotten nicer and crime has reduced a bit. But there are still shootings around there every year and bullet holes deface the walls and doors of several buildings. Also, robbers are always a concern.

So I asked this sweet 83 year old black lady, while I was sitting on her porch drinking a beer with her son and another guy one afternoon, “Do you feel safe living here?”

She answered, yes. She leaves her door open during the day and at night keeps it locked and will not open it for anyone. If someone attempts to come in, she is not afraid to blast them with her 40 caliber handgun with hollow points[bullets.

A .40 caliber handgun with hollow points has one main purpose. It kills human beings. It’s not for hunting. It’s not for stopping people. It’s for killing them. She has it to keep the thugs from taking advantage of her. To kill humans, if necessary. But there are politicians who want to take her gun away because they blame guns and not individuals for the evil acts these thugs commit.

I will never never be a party to taking her gun away.

I hope our country will not allow the heinous acts of crazy people to infringe on her, and all of us, and our 2nd amendment rights.

I like articles like this that bring things down to a personal level. They are credible in their simplicity. I worked in schools in this area and always brought canned food and blankets with me for any homeless people.

I always took great pleasure in the concern the neighbors had for their schools, when I was asked what I was doing there.

This article reminded me of a great NRA TV advertisement of a woman living in a section 8 housing project. Her only protection would be taken away from her with policies that anti-gunners would propose.
