On 01/08/22, patrol deputies from the Thousand Oaks Police Department responded to the open
space area located south of Janss Rd and SR 23 for the report of a subject who had been beaten
with a bat. Upon their arrival, they located the victim, who had suffered significant head trauma.
The victim was transported and admitted to a local hospital for the injuries he suffered from the
attack.
Information gathered from the victim and witnesses identified the suspects as Joel
Sanmiguel, Hugo Arias, and Oscar Valdizon. All three worked in conjunction to attack and beat
the victim.
East County Major Crimes detectives responded to assist patrol personnel with the
investigation.
On 01/09/22, at approximately 12:25 am, Hugo Arias was located and arrested by detectives and
patrol personnel near the area where the crime occurred. East County Major Crimes detectives
and members of the Thousand Oaks Vulnerable Population Unit continued the search for the two
other outstanding suspects.


On 01/12/22, at approximately 9:00 pm, Joel Sanmiguel was located by detectives and patrol
personnel at a residence in Thousand Oaks and arrested.


On 01/26/22, at approximately 2:40 pm, Oscar Valdizon was located by detectives and arrested
at a private residence in Thousand Oaks.


All subjects were booked for violations of 664/187 PC – Attempt Murder and 182(a) PC –
Conspiracy to Commit a Crime.
