Train Traffic halted as Ventura City Fire tackle river bed blaze

On July 23rd at 3:52PM, Ventura City Fire Department was dispatched to multiple reports of a fire burning in the Ventura river bed next to the Ventura County Fair Grounds.  When firefighters arrived at the scene they discovered a 100’ x 50’ fire burning in thick arundo and vegetation.  With the help of a water dropping helicopter and fire control hand crew the fire was controlled 30 minutes after crews arrived and completely extinguished after two hours.

Do to the proximity of railroad tracks to the fire; all train traffic was stopped for approximately 1 hour while fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.  No firefighters were injured as a result of the fire.
